Business Continuity

Temporary re-location of patients to another department, or even another facility, can be challenging for the patient and their families, as well as health-care providers.

Significant strain can be placed on departments where reduced capacity is required due to either a planned or emergency renovation.  

In cases like these, the MMU can be an invaluable resource to help ease renovation capacity pressures and ensure quality patient care is maintained. 

Because the MMU is a flexible space, offering a broad range of clinical capability, it can be adapted to support many different department needs. 

For example, the unit was seconded for three months by Northern Health to act as Kitimat General Hospital’s temporary emergency department (ED) while their permanent ED underwent renovations. This enabled patients to continue to receive care in their own community and staff were able to work at their usual site. 

The unit has also served as a temporary intensive care unit in Cranbrook for two weeks, supporting critical care for patients and their families.  

During renovation, it’s ideal for the unit to set up adjacent to the host facility. This allows for MMU connectivity to internal computer networks, and hospital phone and public address systems as required. This close proximity also allows any department-specific equipment to be transported into the MMU with greater ease.
